John Metcalfe certainly knows his way around the Watkinson’s organisation and the company’s unique levels of expertise and client service – and that’s not just been learned since he was appointed Managing Director.
Because the 50 year old began life as a driver for us back in 1982 – spending all his driving time to and from Germany six days a week. As he says: -
“It was very tiring, but the company had a big contract in place and it certainly taught me a lot about Continental driving…..”
Common sense
John moved to outside installation work in 1986 for four years then left for other pastures, only to return in 1995 and becoming responsible for running the yard, transport and warehousing roles…
His “hands on” background coupled with the Managing Director role brings a depth of knowledge and experience which clients appreciate – but how does John view his role and what gives him the most satisfaction?
“The job is simply the application of common sense and experience” he says, Fortunately we have robust and continuous health, safety and environmental training and accreditation policies in place which make life a little easier”.
New customers
John says the motivation is being able to provide a high level of service to customers – to which Watkinson’s add their unique touch:-
“Satisfaction levels are high, as the testimonials on our website show. It’s that which gives us the ‘buzz’ and continues to attract new customers”.
Watkinson’s are weathering the downturn and its aftermath well, though John concedes it hasn’t been easy:-
“We’ve been established 100 years and we’ve seen some ups and downs in that time including two World Wars, so we’re not doing too badly” he smiles.
